Biography
Dr. George O. White III is an Assistant Professor of International Business in the School of Management at the University of Michigan–Flint. He teaches classes on international management and international business. George earned a B.A. in Asian History from the University of Alabama in 1995. He received a Certificate in Mandarin Chinese from Feng Chia University in Taichung, Taiwan in 1997. He earned a J.D. in Law and Certificate in International Law from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2001; an LL.M. in International Commercial Law from the Graduate School of Law at Emory University in 2002; an MBA in General Management from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2006; and a Ph.D. in International Business from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2008.
Dr. White’s research interests include global strategy and international management issues faced by multinational enterprise (MNE) subsidiaries operating in emerging markets. More specifically, his primary research interests focus on the influence of host country regulatory environments on MNE subsidiary strategies in Southeast Asia. His dissertation is titled “Relation-Based Strategic Responses to Volatile Regulatory Environments: Conceptual and Empirical Analyses of Wholly Owned Subsidiaries in Southeast Asia”. He collected primary data for his dissertation by conducting field interviews with executives and senior managers of wholly owned foreign subsidiaries operating in the Philippines. In collaboration with colleagues, George has published in peer reviewed journals such as the International Business Review and the International Journal of Conflict Management. He has also published a book chapter on business strategies in the P.R.China in the Marketing In The 21st Century book series. He has presented his research at several international conferences and consortiums, including the Academy of International Business and the Academy of Management.
Dr. White has been the recipient of numerous scholarships, grants, honors, and awards such as the graduate merit based Cotton Memorial Scholarship, the University of Texas at El Paso Graduate School Professional Funding Award, and a College of Business Administration dissertation research grant. He was also a recipient of the Academy of International Business and Society for the Advancement of Management Studies Research Travel Grant. George studied Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan on an Academic Langauge Exchange Scholarship at Feng Chia University and was an alternate for the prestigious Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (Ministry of Education) Chinese Language Scholarship.
While pursuing his Ph.D. degree, Dr. White worked as an instructor and research assistant for the Department of Marketing and Management in the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Prior to attending UTEP, George worked as a Visiting Professor of International Business Law and Global Commerce at Hebei Normal University and as an Adjunct Professor of International Business Law and Global Commerce at the Shijiazhuang College of Law and Commerce, both in Shijiazhuang, P.R.China. He was also appointed by the municipal government as an Economic Adviser to the Shijiazhuang National Hi-Tech Development Zone. While a graduate student, he interned with the United States Agency for International Development (Asia and Near East Bureau) in Washington, D.C. and taught English as a second language while living in Taiwan. Dr. White has consulted on numerous foreign direct investment and MNE strategy projects in Southeast Asia and the P.R.China. He has studied, worked, and lived in the Philippines, the P.R.China, Taiwan, and Hungary. Dr. White is still actively affiliated with Hebei Normal University as a Research Fellow and Honorary Professor of Global Commerce. Dr. White is a member of the Academy of International Business, Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, and Asia Academy of Management.
